How To Clean A Corn Cob Pipe

Can you deep clean a cob?

Can you deep clean a cob and if so, how? I often finish a pipe as I arrive somewhere (smoke while I drive), and just put the bowl down and clean it hours later. I don't mind this but want to give em a deep clean every week or so. Is this viable with a cob? When I smoke my briars I immediately clean them out because I set aside time to enjoy the full ritual of it.

I take alcohol soaked pipe cleaner and run it through the stem and shank when it gets funky. If there is still an off taste you can rub the inside of the bowl with one if these but other than that all you will need to do is ream the bowl when it gets to filled up with cake. Barring catastrophic failure, the cob can outlast you with this little maintenance.

What are appropriate alcohols? Should I be using grain alcohol or isopropyl?

Cobs don't really need a "deep" clean.

Wipe the inside of the bowl with a pipe cleaner to collect any excess ash/tar, and you're more or less done.

If it's a real mess in there, you can use sandpaper on a stick to remove the inner surface.

I always "scrub" the bowl with a pipe cleaner, just wasn't sure if I should be cleaning with some solution to get built up dottle and other potential funk out

Some tar inside of the bowl is as tough, stubborn as hardened dental plaque. For me, it's like a pain in the ass to get my pipe clean.

Screw a paper towel around in the bowl after each use, pipe cleaner inserted while resting and every once grain alcohol with pipe cleaner. I hear of burnouts but I do not do a ton of relights at the bottom...just dump and move on. They can last for years.

I'm glad this was posted. Just bought my first pipe and it's a cob. So it sounds like you don't have to do the old salt and vodka trick to one?

Honestly cobs are semi disposable. I'm sure there are methods for cleaning you could use. But most people tend to just buy a new one after years of abuse.

We're only talking months and because I don't clean immediately after use
