  1. I just recieved a .17 caliber rifle not too long ago. For my start time cleaning it, it seemed a little more than difficult and time consuming than my other rifles, and I presume its going to be that way since the diameter is then pocket-size. I used a cleaning rod to push button the patch through the barrel to clean information technology.

I was wondering if there was an easier and quicker way to clean the butt??

  2. I am very happy with a Patch-Worm for smaller calibers and routine cleaning.

  3. what exactly is the patch worm, how do you attatch the patches, and tin yous buy more patches from stores?
  4. I use a Hoppe's bore snake. works just fine:)
  5. I use a bore snake as well.
  6. I apply a push rod with Hoppes ix solvent, get the bore dry, and shoot some Gunslick bore foam and expect thirty minutes. Patches come up make clean pretty quick thereafter. Peradventure ammo brand is a variable to consider? I shoot Hornady and make clean up is no biggy.
  7. Don't have any 17's but I apply bore snakes for quick cleanings on my 22'southward.
  8. I use an air rifle cleaning rod. 17 cal patches are tiny, as are the jags. In that location are some mfg's of 17 cal felt pellets that tin exist mounted to a jag, soaked with diameter cleaner and pushed through. They don't really become THAT dirty though. Use a .22 cal bore mop for the chamber.
  9. A Patch-Worm is essentially a length of nylon weed-whacker line with a small push on i stop and a sharpened point on the other terminate of the line.

The kit comes with various larger buttons which are sized for different calibers.

Slide the right size button onto the line, place a patch (any correctly-sized patch volition work, pierce the patch with the pointy cease) onto the line and slide it all the way down to the button.

Feed the pointy terminate into the barrel and pull it out the other end, so draw the patch (with solvent, oil, or dry) through the barrel.

I purchased a rifle kit (longer) and a pistol kit (shorter) for well-nigh $10.00 each from Midway.

1 tin can pull commencement at the breech end on whatever gun, and there is no worry most dissentious the crown or the rifling.

When I demand a rod, I apply ane, simply usually a few pulls through the butt accomplish what I need.

  10. thanks for the patch-worm data! i have institute some more than info on information technology and it looks like a nice product.

now for the boresnake, i accept read that it has a strong metallic/brass brush in it to clean away residue within the bore. i personally do not utilise the potent metallic/brass brushes when i clean my rifles with a rod. i accept heard that excessive apply with these can habiliment down the rifling in the bore, so my question is with the boresnake y'all would have to employ the metal brush (that is fabricated into it) every time that you pull the ophidian through, so does or will this impact the rifling in my .17 if i make clean with a boresnake all the time, whether i am at the range or at domicile??

  11. I merely used Butch'due south Diameter Polish on my 17 tonight and was very surprised how well it cleaned the barrel. I used it on a mop, went back and along a couple times, then let kraut for 10 minutes or so before passing some dry patches through. Only two came out dirty after the bore smooth.
  12. No easier way it'south a nightmare when I accept to clean ours too
  13. Odd, I'vew never encountered anything particualry difficult nearly cleaning my Marlin 917VSF
  14. to make something clear, i accept never encountered any difficulty cleaning my cruel .17, it simply takes longer than other rifles i own.

cheers for the data most the patch-worm, it looks like a adept product.

now to the bore snake. i have heard that cleaning a gun over and over with a metal/contumely brush can wear down the rifling over time. for this reason, i do non always employ my metal brush when cleaning my rifles with a rod. so my question is since the bore ophidian has the metal brush made into it (and you tin can't remove the metallic brush), will the bore snake wear down my rifling if i use it all the time to clean my .17 whether i am at habitation or at the range??

  15. Statuary bristle brushes don't wear out barrels. Information technology'south the running of a cleaning rod from the cage cease with out a bore protector allowing the steel or coated rod with imbedded fouling to rub the diameter at the muzzle crown.

Clean from the chamber end and use proper size brushes and rod and y'all won't accept any bug.

Bore snakes and similar devices practise a satisfactory task of removing course fouling and pulverisation residue but exercise zippo to remove copper jacket fouling.

I don't shoot my .17HMR enough to demand to use a rod and castor and metallic removing compounds. If I shot it 200-300rds a calendar month, then I'd need to on occasion.

Unlike the various .17 centerfires, the .17HMR at ~2,600fps dosen't seem to leave well-nigh equally much copper fouling.

I've only shot my Marlin 917V perhaps 300rds. I've used a brush with a patch wrapped effectually it and Remington bore cleaner on the patch once.(other cleanings were with Shooters Selection copper solvent and patches). This was while the bore was still breaking in. After the "skillful" cleaning, it went from peradventure 1.5-2moa to at present consistently nether 1" for 5-shots at 100yds. Bore is very shine and a joy to clean with simply a laissez passer through the bore with a bore snake afterward firing. (I've made 10 shots to have v crows, two armadillo's, and ii 'possums, and 1 coyote since the last range session 3yrs ago).

I don't shoot it much, but do enjoy information technology immensely.

  16. It won't brand any appreciable departure.

I know that many swear by their Bore-Snakes, but my business organization is that, unless one washes it after every utilize, 1 is dragging previously-removed material down the barrel.

On Rimfire Cardinal, 1 of the more than experienced posters (moderator also?) states that she uses a Patch-Worm for her .22s, and she seems to know what she is doing. Wait in the CZ section of the website. Lots of .17 experts over there.

Ane tin can also mode a brand-shift Patch-Worm out of weed-trimmer line, but for $10.00, the true article is a bargain, in my opinion. (I folded the line back on itself and secured information technology with line-fishing line, only, without the "buttons" for diverse calibers, ane is just pulling a loose patch through the butt.)

I believe that there is a .17 quotient Patch-Worm available, and the button affixed to the end of the line is the proper size for .17 cal.

  18. I only clean the diameter of my .17 when the groups start opening up, which is somewhere effectually 500 rounds. I use a ball bearing handled rod (forget the brand) with a bronze brush and Sweet's 7.62 solvent, and so patches until they come up through clean.

There is no reason to make clean a rimfire after every use.
